Full Scholarships Available at Emma Willard School

Located in Troy, N.Y., Emma Willard School is the oldest girls’ school in the United States. The boarding school
educates 310 girls in grades 9 – 12, and seeks to foster in young women a love of learning, the habits of an intellectual
life, and the character, moral strength and qualities of leadership to serve and shape the world.
Believing that education is the pathway to true global understanding, the Shelby Cullom Davis family has selected Emma Willard School
to participate in two groundbreaking pilot programs that further the school’s efforts to provide an empowering education to talented
and motivated girls from across the globe. The goal of the Davis Scholars Programs — one for international students and one for domestic
students — is to attract highly motivated, potential future leaders who will benefit from the educational opportunities of select American
boarding schools. The domestic program also seeks to serve those students who would be among the first in their family to attend college.
The grants are need-based, and each successful candidate will have her full need met by grants from the Davis family and from Emma Willard
School. Students may enroll in the 10th, 11th and 12th grades, as well as during the postgraduate year. Upon graduation from Emma Willard,
Davis Scholars are eligible for continued scholarship support at any of the 89 Davis United World Scholars colleges and universities,
which now support more than 1,400 students from 126 countries. Successful candidates for the Davis Scholars Program will be excellent
students in their current academic setting, demonstrate leadership and service potential, and possess a strong command of English.
“As our world becomes smaller and yet increasingly complex, initiatives like the Davis Scholars Program will make a notable difference
in levels of awareness, tolerance and sensitivity among young people worldwide. What better way to prepare the leaders of tomorrow for
the challenges they will face?” said Trudy Hall, the head of school.
Carol Brice, an Emma Willard alumna, has nothing but praise for her high school experience at the school. Brice, who attended Emma Willard
from 1950 – 1954, said her father “wanted something better for us three children than the high school education that was available in our
then-small Northeast community of North Adams, Mass.”
At Emma Willard, Brice said she learned about governance through the school council, which “was an excellent model of student involvement
in the democratic process.” She also benefited from a “holistic curriculum,” which included trips to museums, art galleries and theater –
experiences that have “survived beyond a chapter or final exam for the semester.” Brice said she also enjoyed the school’s many opportunities
for fun – from a competitive sports program to social activities and seasonal events. The school’s beautiful facilities and location,
interaction with diverse faculty and students, and forming life-long friendships were also perks of attending Emma Willard.
“To attend the top girls’ school in the country is an invaluable opportunity. Personal responsibility and growth are keynotes of this
amazing high school adventure. The future of Alaska is in the hands of our youth, and Emma Willard School is committed to developing
the leadership potential in each and every student,” Brice said, adding that she would be happy to speak further with interested students
and their families. “I would love to help in any way to influence a young woman from Alaska to attend Emma Willard School.”
